Annie’s Grief (Running Up That Hill)

The Oscars are 3 days away! To celebrate I am sharing with you today another ice skating montage starring two of this year’s leading ladies: Emma Stone and Margot Robbie. From nominated films, Poor Things, and Barbie, respectively.

Notice the mood change from the previous video as we return from Finland, the happiest country on Earth, to The United States, a land of demons. For, it can be said that if European girls greet their rivals with kisses, ours bash their knees in with a hammer. If you don’t know the true story of figure skater, Tonya Harding, it is bananas (look it up).

Without further adieu, here is the vid. I’ll include some more info at the end (for anybody interested). CONTENT ADVISORY: Language, Substance Use.

Thanks for watching!

Addendum: (The show Maniac, and Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy)

Emma Stone’s character, Annie is from The 2018 Netflix series, Maniac. Cary Fukunaga’s (True Detective, No Time to Die) remake of the 2014 Norwegian series by the same name is about an experimental clinical drug trial to treat mental illness. Annie is suffering from PTSD as a result of a car accident that claimed the life of her younger sister.

In real life, psychedelic therapy (Marijuana, Psilocybin, LSD, Ketamine, MDMA, DMT) is slowly becoming more mainstream. As a psychologist, and as somebody who struggles with depression, EF believes psychedelic-assisted therapy is a promising alternative to traditional approaches. Especially for individuals suffering from “treatment-resistant” depression, As well as many other disorders, of course. There is so much pain in this country. Roughly 100,000 Americans die each year from opioid overdoses. Alternatives cannot come soon enough.

Psychedelics are also extremely powerful, and dangerous. But not in the same lowly league as opioids. In general, psychedelics are much safer, physically. Their danger is more mental. I aspire to write more about this topic in the future.

EF made this video 3 years before Stranger Things re-popularized Kate Bush’s gem in season 4. Furthermore, the character of Annie bears an uncanny resemblance to the character of Max from Stranger Things. Also Meg Myers🎤 is a dead-ringer for Winona Ryder. I am a massive fan of the show, since the beginning. As such, I was influenced by the earlier seasons in making this ice skating video. And in general, am drawn to the same influences as The Duffers and other filmmakers. So it might be said that great minds think alike, as the saying goes☺️

  1. Great video!! Somehow I completely missed Maniac on Netflix! I didn’t know Cary Fukunaga directed that and boy, with Emma Stone in it I have to check it out. Plus I like Billy Magnussen, he’s quite a versatile actor. In any case, I sure hope Emma wins this Sunday for Poor Things!

    1. Thanks, ruth! Maniac is a quirky series. I enjoyed the sci-fi / psychology of it. Emma shines, of course. And Billy plays that charismatic psycho role he’s so good at. Have you seen Ingrid Goes West? I thought he was very good in that as the socialite’s protective brother.

      1. I definitely have to watch Maniac then, perhaps after I’m done w/ SHOGUN (which is such an amazing series)!

No I haven’t seen Ingrid Goes West, but might check it out!

  2. Have you seen Requiem for a Dream (2000)? Something in your text made me think of it. I’ve seen it only once but the weight of it stayed with me for a very long time. I should give it a rewatch 24 years later.

    1. Yes, the image of Jared Leto’s infected heroin arm is forever stuck in my mind!🤢 A memorable and painful film. And also a very good reminder of the dangers of drugs. Very relevant, thank you.

    1. I have carved my whole life Around my depression. And if it were not for substances like Marijuana, I don’t know how I would have survived the crippling fog that befalls naturally, as a matter of course. Psychedelics, the few times I have tried them (and in small doses) Have, more often than not sliced through that thick fog and cleared / reset my psychology so profoundly… One positive psychedelic experience (and I have had several bad ones too) But one positive success can power me for months! Mitigating the fog in general, but also giving me hope. Hope that a clear day can come again in the future.

  3. That’s not a bad version of “Running Up That Hill”. My wife hates most covers, but I feel like she might not object too badly to this one. (She likes Within Temptation’s cover of “Radioactive”, for instance, and also Martika’s cover of “I Feel the Earth Move”. Just don’t dare cover a Fleetwood Mac song in her presence.) I on the other hand am always open to a good cover and I’d say this is one. On the other hand I’ve heard a cover of Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work” by somebody named Maxwell and that one is just atrocious. I find it very puzzling that a lot of people seem to like it better than the original. 🤷‍♂️

    1. So I dragged my wife in and made her listen to that cover and she pronounced it “not terrible”, which is pretty high praise for a cover coming from her. She said she was impressed somebody even attempted a cover of this particular song … 😁

    2. I am learning a lot of great music from you! I don’t have enough hip GenX ers in my life and that represents a great blindspot in my music knowledge and pop culture in general. Just listened to and much enjoyed Martika’s cover of “I Feel The Earth Move” Groovy 80s Madonna vibes. Thank you for these Treasures🎶

    1. Thank you, my friend! Gratitude for you, my biggest fan😅 (These videos are for the Jungians!) And gratitude for the divine feminine. Without women I am no artist, no filmmaker at all! Have a great weekend🖖🍻

  5. Wow as usual!

No need for me to read up on Tonya Harding, that was like the biggest news in my childhood days. It was something my parents talked about a lot as well as my classmates in school. That was also when Nancy Kerrigan became America’s Sweetheart because of this.

This video made me think of something. I used to work in China and South Korea and education there is highly, almost obsessively, competitive. Those kids study their butts off 12 hours a day if you can believe that! There are some commentators who decry how Americans are not as competitive as Asians. When it comes to academics, sure. When it comes to sports and athletics, no. Americans are probably a lot more competitive when it comes to sports and equally obsessive.

    1. Your experience in living and working in China and South Korea is very interesting! You have perspective. So helpful for Westerners like myself who have never lived abroad… Americans are so “ADD” we cannot sit still long enough to study for 1 hour a day, let alone 12! So we play more sports.

      1. I don’t think that is much the case. South Korean kids have probably bigger ADD problems than American kids considering how many screens they are surrounded with. Believe me, if you go to Seoul, it will make New York or LA look old fashioned by comparison.

It is true most Americans can’t spend an hour studying. On the other hand, I think even many Americans don’t like spending too much time exercising. It can be said for a lot of Koreans. That said, I find that there is more of an importance for Americans to be good at sports as it is important for Koreans to be good at academics, ergo the obsession in both countries in their respective fields.
