“We all wish it was us. That’s why we believe.”
I have developed a bad habit recently of talking about myself, rather than the movies I purport to write about on this blog. I shan’t break course in this post, as I do not yet have the strength. For now I want to tell you about my own experience watching Denis Villeneuve’s new science fiction film, Blade Runner 2049, the other night. I will be brief. And I won’t spoil anything major. “You’re a man looking at the world through a keyhole, and you’ve spent your whole life trying to widen that keyhole – to see more, to know more. And now, upon hearing that it can be widened, in ways you can’t imagine, you reject the possibility.”
The famed mythologist, Joseph Campbell, said that Step #1 in The Hero’s Journey is The Call to Adventure. The caller, of course, is The Universe, and it wants the hero to undergo a transformative experience of some kind. But the hero must pick up the phone in order for the journey to commence. “I’m not asking you to die for me. I’m asking you to trust me.”
“1 minute 10 seconds, a new record!” exclaims a halfling sized creature that looks like a cross between the ugly duckling and a gargoyle. Sgt. Laureline (Cara Delevingne) dizzily removes a bulbous, blue fluorescent jellyfish from her head and collapses on the dock inside a Big Blue subterranean cavern. The writers of Rogue One have a message for us. Just like Galen Erso, they buried it in their creation. The message is simple, but powerful, and it has to do with The Force. Continue reading “EFC 2.01 – Rogue One”

Welcome to the darkly fantastic word of Miss Peregrine, a place where time stands still but hearts beat fast, and gardens bloom when spell is cast. Lush and green; Oh what a scene! Where dreams are projected like Kodak carousels, and peculiarity’s the spice of life; forget all your strife. And may you stay forever young. “If you must blink do it now. Pay careful attention to everything you see and hear, no matter how unusual it may seem.”
Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) is a hero’s tale which shall live on, thanks to the ingenuity of animator/director, Travis Knight, and the folks at LAIKA studios, who brought you Coraline (2009) and The Box Trolls (2014). Their 4th full-length feature is a visual marvel, a fantastic feast for the imagination, and a proper ode to storytellers everywhere. Overall, this film is a blissful experience.
