Of the (now) 50 movies in this montage (Due out Oct. 11), Kill Bill (2003) and Sucker Punch (2011) merely contain the plot. Which, as my second “Intro To Screenwriting” instructor once told me, is “kinda important.”
(Yes, blending the Pop and Gothic visual styles is indeed a nightmare. Coloring especially. It’s not gonna be great.)
Now, one of these two movies is a 21st century classic. The other, a beautiful but confusing mess. All my friends here seem to agree. But I still love Sucker Punch, and am chasing my own rabbit through Zack Snyder’s world. That’s why I plan to spend the next decade re-cutting his movie, and using the entire canon to stitch it back together. That’s really what it’s going to take – everything. Minus the guns.
If Sucker Punch is going to be the saga, Kill Bill is merely an episode within it (it would seem I got that backwards, wouldn’t it). As much as I detest Tarantino’s ultraviolence, I can’t argue, the director’s got style like no other. What I adore most about his movies is that, at no point is he ever truly serious. Even in the most intense scenes there’s always that hint (or helping) of humor. I have not been able to replicate this in the edit.
Can’t do it better, only differently. Which is great in this case since I’m branding as late-night entertainment and Tarantino doesn’t fit that criteria for most people anyway (i.e., non blood-thirsty movie-goers). So the first thing I’ll do differently is remove the blood (mostly). Some people aren’t going to like that. I’m not losing sleep about it.
Late night entertainment should be relaxing first and foremost. That’s why I’m removing much of Tarantino’s violence, and why, going forward you’re going to see more slower-paced edits from Experience Film. In addition to the high octane jet fuel. I will make it clear which is which (I’ll implement another emoji meter or something).
In the case of this upcoming montage, Face/Off, the first half is designed specifically to put you to sleepπ
On release day I’ll release two videos. The first will be the full episode. The second, just the first half of the episode. Will likely apply a mellow gold filter here too, per the red-light therapeutic phenomenon we discussed last post.
Exciting times at Experience Film. Less than a month until Face/Off take off! Am working tirelessly to finish on schedule. Real life has of course blown up at the same time. No sleep (till Brooklyn) this September, Billy Joe. (We love a mashup!) Next post I’ll share with you another big change I’ve made to these flawed but awesome movies.
Thanks for readingππΌ

sounds exciting; enjoyed all these films — though I have forgotten most of ‘Sucker Punch’ —

How you do keep up with the moviesπ As for Sucker Punch, the goal is to make it more memorable.

I have the movie channels on Foxtel. I go to a cinema if there’s a movie — like ‘Thelma’ — I really want to see; and I keep up with movie news in magazines and journals; I love movies — and o, I’m putting a post inspired by your last suggestion later in the day —

Kill Bill… What can I say? There was a lot going on under the hood that kept me curious. Gogo Yubari as the extended version of “Girl #13”, the “Robobitch” from Koushun Takami’s, Battle Royale. And “O-Ren Ishii”, the manifestation of a bottomless well of unrequited love, the antithesis to the Bride, the collective Furies of Allecto, Tisiphone, and Megaera.
As for Sucker Punch, a good excuse for a series of compelling music videos. Yeah… I’ll confess to liking Bjork, all the way back to the Ice Cubes. Go for it!

Thanks for this insightful and rich comment, LT! And the encouragement. You are my go-to resource now for all things Japan. While editing this I’ve learned about some of the inside references you mention here. E.g. Gogo as a continuation of her “Battle Royale” character. As is Hattori Hanzo, who was the protagonist of four seasons of a Japanese tv show called “Shadow Warrior” in the 80s. Portrayed by the same actor, Sonny Shiba. The Kill Bill special features has been a good resource for me also… Most of the movie was filmed in Beijing. Believe it or not.

Chiba Shinichi, (family name, given name) written, εθ ηδΈ… there’s a joke in his retired profession in Kill Bill. The kanji in Sonny’s written (stage) name translate directly as “thousand-leaf true-one” in a reference to the “Man’yΕshΕ«” (δΈθι), or “Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves”, a Nara period (around 760AD) collection of classical Japanese poetry.
Look up “Iwakuni sushi” (岩ε½ε―ΏεΈ), aka Thousand Leaf sushi. π

I think Kill Bill and Sucker Punch could work very well together. I’m not a huge fan of ultraviolence either, but Tarantino is the exception for me. Good luck with your schedule. I’ve had a lot of free time lately, so I only have 33 reviews left to write this year.

It’s a good feeling to be ahead of schedule; I envy you. I think I’m ahead of schedule, but not by muchπ
