Tundra 5: Tome Raider

“You will not see what you do not look for, maggot!” -The Gunslinger

“The Tome” is EF’s new local Fantasy bookstore. Per the recommendation of our english teacher older sister, Baby and I scheduled an artist date to explore Autumn’s lair, and secure the Phoenix Prophecy relic. What better soundtrack for our expedition than the auburn-haired rock goddess’s new solo project? Left with the windows down and the stereo cranked.

Harry Potter headlining an epic sci-fi fantasy lineup is not uncommon. He is most popular after all. And since it was an HP book we were seeking, I knew we had come to the right place as soon as we walked through the door greeted by this breathtaking hand (maid) painted mural. Our beloved magical orphan at the center.

“There’s no place like Tome. Go ask Alice…

Speaking of orphans at the center, we caught a glowing news story recently, on CBS’s Sunday Morning news, about a new foster care village being built in Palmdale, CA. Specifically designed to keep foster siblings together. Hence, it’s being called, “Together California.” The project is being spearheaded by none other than, wait for it… The Dark Knight himself, Christian Bale! Enter. Sandman.

Bruce Wayne is an orphan. Lara Croft, orphan. Every other Disney character… Baby Doll… It’s kinda ridiculous isn’t it? The degree to which the industry glamorizes the tragedy of losing one’s parents. At any rate it certainly makes for strong character development.

Let’s return now from this charitable spelunking side quest, to the bookstore. Back in The Tome, Aragorn was rallying the Fellowship on the muted TV, as Autumn, the shop keeper rang us up, gave us some complimentary goodies and invited us to HP fest later this month. Needless to say, “I’ll be back.”

  1. Again I wish there was a comic/bookstore like this in my town. I love Tyeth Towers where I live but the surrounding town has virtually nothing to offer. The only thing that comes close is a Sci-Fi collectibles shop that only opens ONE afternoon a week!
Anyhoo on a more positive note, I’m proud of myself…I recognised Hayley Williams’ voice before I read your comment saying who the singer was. Who knew I’m cultured! 😎

    1. I am impressed but not surprised You know Paramore because of your musical prowess and because you like Likin Park, another alt-rock phenomenon of the the 2000s. They show up on a lot of bills and playlists together👏🤘😎☢️

      1. Hi again, yes it helped that I was asked to step in and cover for a local band’s keyboard player a few years back as a one off. The problem was I only had a day to learn a basic keys part for a couple of tracks – wow that sharpened my playing up. The two tracks were “Fake Happy” and “Told You So” – Fake Happy I was fairly comfortable with as it has a typical synth line/sounds but Told You So was fun as it has a calypso tinge to to it and I had to play the xylophone/marimba percussive sections too.

  2. Have you seen Wreck-It Ralph? The scene where Vanellope encounters a room full of Disney princesses, who start telling her about all the awful things that have been inflicted upon all of them by life and/or evil family members, had me in stitches.

  3. Cool post and interesting point about Disney & “degree to which the industry glamorizes the tragedy of losing one’s parents”.

Christian Bale is okay by me!

  4. Hey I watched the news about Christian Bale’s Together California project a while back. Good for him! He seems unusually chirpy talking about it. Ahah, interesting point about Batman being an orphan; perhaps that’s one of the reasons Bale was keen on building the project.
