EFC 2.09: Blade Runner 2049

Feat. The music of Vitaliy Zavadskyy

“We all wish it was us. That’s why we believe.”

I have developed a bad habit recently of talking about myself, rather than the movies I purport to write about on this blog. I shan’t break course in this post, as I do not yet have the strength. For now I want to tell you about my own experience watching Denis Villeneuve’s new science fiction film, Blade Runner 2049, the other night. I will be brief. And I won’t spoil anything major.  Continue reading “EFC 2.09: Blade Runner 2049”

EFC 2.07 – Dr. Strange

Feat. The Music of Cold War Kids, and Earth, Wind & Fire (In a Special EFC Music Video!)

“You’re a man looking at the world through a keyhole, and you’ve spent your whole life trying to widen that keyhole – to see more, to know more. And now, upon hearing that it can be widened, in ways you can’t imagine, you reject the possibility.”

The famed mythologist, Joseph Campbell, said that Step #1 in The Hero’s Journey is The Call to Adventure. The caller, of course, is The Universe, and it wants the hero to undergo a transformative experience of some kind. But the hero must pick up the phone in order for the journey to commence. EFC 2.05 – Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

Feat. The Music of Alexiane

“I’m not asking you to die for me. I’m asking you to trust me.”

That’s A Very Nice Hat

“1 minute 10 seconds, a new record!” exclaims a halfling sized creature that looks like a cross between the ugly duckling and a gargoyle. Sgt. Laureline (Cara Delevingne) dizzily removes a bulbous, blue fluorescent jellyfish from her head and collapses on the dock inside a Big Blue subterranean cavern. EFC 11: Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children

Feat. The Music of Florence + The Machine

“We don’t discuss the future here. We enjoy living in the here and now.”

Welcome to the darkly fantastic word of Miss Peregrine, a place where time stands still but hearts beat fast, and gardens bloom when spell is cast. Lush and green; Oh what a scene! Where dreams are projected like Kodak carousels, and peculiarity’s the spice of life; forget all your strife. And may you stay forever young. EFC 08: Kubo and the Two Strings

Feat. The Performance by Regina Spektor of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.”

“If you must blink do it now. Pay careful attention to everything you see and hear, no matter how unusual it may seem.”

Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) is a hero’s tale which shall live on, thanks to the ingenuity of animator/director, Travis Knight, and the folks at LAIKA studios, who brought you Coraline (2009) and The Box Trolls (2014). Their 4th full-length feature is a visual marvel, a fantastic feast for the imagination, and a proper ode to storytellers everywhere. Overall, this film is a blissful experience. EFC 07: Sicario

Feat. The Music of Lana Del Rey & Johan Johansson

“You should move to a small town, somewhere the rule of law still exists. You will not survive here. You are not a wolf, and this is a land of wolves now.”

Lady Justice, blind as she is, cannot see those treacherous individuals who thwart her efforts. Even as they stand beside her… Continue reading “EFC 07: Sicario”

EFC 06: Suicide Squad

Feat. The Music of Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa & Imagine Dragons w/ Logic & Ty Dolla $ign ft. X Ambassadors

Our bird’s been jacked. Light it up!

August is a strange month of year. As autumn approaches the leaves begin to turn color, even though it’s hotter than El Diablo’s hands outside. Those fresh summer threads are going out of style but it’s still too early to plunder the fall wardrobe so you wear them anyway. It’s almost time for back to school but the kids are still in the swimming pool. August is a month of awkward transitions it seems. So I figured, why not feature a film that’s also full of awkward transitions? Continue reading “EFC 06: Suicide Squad”
