EFC 10: The Witch

Feat. The Music of Shearwater (in a special EFC music video!)

“Oh, God, my Lord, I now begin. Oh, help me and I’ll leave my sin. For I repent and thou shall be. Thru evil I will turn to thee. Whomever shall destroy my faith. For I repent and thou shall be.”

It takes just one scene for Robert Eggers’ Witch to earn its price of admission. Maybe one shot, even. For me at least. That scene occurs at a pivotal moment in the story when Caleb, alone in the dark forest, and cradling his father’s rifle, begins frantically praying. Continue reading “EFC 10: The Witch”

EFC 11: Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children

Feat. The Music of Florence + The Machine

“We don’t discuss the future here. We enjoy living in the here and now.”

Welcome to the darkly fantastic word of Miss Peregrine, a place where time stands still but hearts beat fast, and gardens bloom when spell is cast. Lush and green; Oh what a scene! Where dreams are projected like Kodak carousels, and peculiarity’s the spice of life; forget all your strife. And may you stay forever young. New Inside Out Scoring System (Suggestions Welcome!)

Oi! Can I get some help over here? So you may have noticed the new little emotion characters at the bottom of each EFC post (I know what you’re thinking – cute, right? 🙄). And if you’ve seen Pixar’s Inside Out, or if you’ve read my Frozen Inside Out post, then you probably have at least some idea what they mean. Here I’ll explain their significance in full. And, when we get to the fun part, I’ll tell you how you can help out. But first let me back up for a second. Continue reading “New Inside Out Scoring System (Suggestions Welcome!)”

EFC 09: The Light Between Oceans

Feat. The Music of Beach House (in a special EFC music video!)

“We can’t rightly ever talk about the future, if you think about it. We can only talk about what we imagine, or wish for.”

In the introductory post, I suggested that good films make us think, and even better ones make us feel something. Well, if you go by this rule of thumb, then The Light Between Oceans (2016) is better film. It’ll make you feel, even if that feeling is Sadness.  Continue reading “EFC 09: The Light Between Oceans”

EFC 08: Kubo and the Two Strings

Feat. The Performance by Regina Spektor of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.”

“If you must blink do it now. Pay careful attention to everything you see and hear, no matter how unusual it may seem.”

Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) is a hero’s tale which shall live on, thanks to the ingenuity of animator/director, Travis Knight, and the folks at LAIKA studios, who brought you Coraline (2009) and The Box Trolls (2014). Their 4th full-length feature is a visual marvel, a fantastic feast for the imagination, and a proper ode to storytellers everywhere. Overall, this film is a blissful experience. Continue reading “EFC 08: Kubo and the Two Strings”

EFC 07: Sicario

Feat. The Music of Lana Del Rey & Johan Johansson

“You should move to a small town, somewhere the rule of law still exists. You will not survive here. You are not a wolf, and this is a land of wolves now.”

Lady Justice, blind as she is, cannot see those treacherous individuals who thwart her efforts. Even as they stand beside her… Continue reading “EFC 07: Sicario”

EFC 06: Suicide Squad

Feat. The Music of Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa & Imagine Dragons w/ Logic & Ty Dolla $ign ft. X Ambassadors

Our bird’s been jacked. Light it up!

August is a strange month of year. As autumn approaches the leaves begin to turn color, even though it’s hotter than El Diablo’s hands outside. Those fresh summer threads are going out of style but it’s still too early to plunder the fall wardrobe so you wear them anyway. It’s almost time for back to school but the kids are still in the swimming pool. August is a month of awkward transitions it seems. So I figured, why not feature a film that’s also full of awkward transitions? Continue reading “EFC 06: Suicide Squad”

EFC 04: Catching Fire

Feat. The Music of James Newton Howard & Garbage

“A spark could be enough to set them ablaze.”

Welcome, welcome! Last year the 74th Hunger Games brought us the greatest love story of our time. Two brave young people, against all odds, choose to die rather than to lose each other. As a nation we shared their agony.

This year these two star-crossed lovers face an even tougher test. Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, of District 12, will square off against none but the most lethal combatants to ever set foot in the arena. Join me, your host, Caesar, in celebrating a very special 75th Hunger Games, Victor’s edition! ISN’T IT SO EXCITING!? HAHAHA! Continue reading “EFC 04: Catching Fire”
